Visiting islets in the fruit season
Date: 28/07/2022

Summer is also the time when Can Tho city is in the fruit season with many fruitful gardens. Particularly, fruit trees on Son islet (area 1, Bui Huu Nghia ward, Binh Thuy district, Can Tho city) are lusher and more succulent than in other places in Can Tho city. Summer is also the season for Son islet to welcome visitors near and far.
Visitors to rambutan garden in Son islet.

With an area of more than 75ha, most of the people on Son islet live by farming and gardening. Fruit trees here are available all year round such as oranges, pomelos, rambutans, longan, guava, star apples, Burmese grapes, etc. Taking advantage of this, the people of Son Island have also switched from farming to farming and tourism in recent years. Thanks to that, people's income is improved, and the value of agricultural products is also increased. Ms. Phan Thi Kim Phuoc, owner of Song Khanh garden, said: “In the past, we grew rambutan and sold at the market, the price was unstable. Now, I don't have to worry about the output. I can collect money from tourists who visit my garden and want to buy fruits”.

Currently, Son islet has more than 30 gardeners participating in tourism in two forms namely private and community model. The community model is more effective because it ensures a stable source of visitors to each gardener in the community.

Like this year's rambutan season, Mr. Ba Binh's garden has ripened early, so he has welcomed guests since May. When Mr. Ba Binh's garden begins producing fewer fruits, Mr. Tam's garden is in full bloom in time to welcome guests next month. After that, the garden of Ms. Nam Phuoc's house is in full bloom. Similarly, the longan garden, bell apple garden, and Burmese grape garden of households in the association will replace their positions when the time has come. With this tourism model, visitors can visit the garden in the right season, enjoy fresh fruits, and gardeners do not have to worry about the source of guests. Ms. Tran Thi Quynh Trang (a tourist from Ho Chi Minh City), said: “I like the garden here, full of big perennial trees and succulent fruits. I am also allowed to pick fruit according to the instructions of the local guides. The fruits picked on the spot are always delicious”.

Each gardener in Son islet has only a few hectares of land, but has a wide range of fruit varieties all year round to serve tourists. Nguyen Thanh Tam, owner of Thanh Tam garden, said: “My garden is intercropped with longan and guava. Longan has high economic value, but there are only 1-2 crops a year. Guava does not have the same economic value, but it quickly bears fruit and bears fruit all year round. Therefore, visitors can come to the garden in any season”. There are three longan varieties on Son islet and each of them is very delicious. Mr. Nguyen Hai Lam (a tourist from Hanoi), said: “This is the first time, my family have been to Son islet. The orchards here are very numerous. I really like coming here because the garden space is very cool, gardens everywhere. Without the local guides, we would have gotten lost. There are many interesting experiences here such as visiting the fruit garden, watching flying snakehead show, making traditional cakes, in general, I am satisfied with this trip.

The hot weather is also a suitable time for visitors to have a cool, relaxing and comfortable visit to the fresh, green and fruit-laden garden. Especially, the fruits in the orchards on the islets in the middle of the river are richer and more delicious. From June to August is the time when Son islet is in full bloom. On this occasion, you not only visit fruit-laden gardens, take beautiful photos, but also enjoy delicious fruits in the garden, or try some unique fruit-based dishes, such as rambutan salad, jackfruit salad, guava salad, etc.
