Launching the pilot project to collect plastic waste by Litter Trap in Can Tho

On June 15th, the Department of Natural Resources and Environment of Can Tho City coordinated with Clear Rivers Organization to organize the Launching Ceremony of the Pilot Project to improve the collection of ocean plastic waste by Litter Traps and establishing a local recycling system in the city.

The project includes items such as: Deploying passive and cost-effective garbage collection equipment of Clear Rivers, Litter Trap; AI-CCTV river-floating waste materials monitoring system; local recycling program based on the existing recycling system to prevent trash incineration or plastic transportation to other cities outside Can Tho; community interview activities to analyze waste management habits in each household and learn about difficulties in applying classification processes; building a model of plastic-free school at a primary school in Can Tho city; consulting with the community to develop a way to solve the problem of plastic waste as well as reporting the results achieved during project implementation...The project implementation period is from May 2024 to April 2025.

According to Mr. Pham Nam Huan, Deputy Director of the Department of Natural Resources and Environment, in the development process, the city faces the challenges of urbanization, environmental pollution, and climate change. With the goal of developing the city in the direction of green, stable and sustainable growth, associated with ecological river identity, the city government has devoted a lot of attention to finding effective solutions to prevent the situation of waste being thrown indiscriminately into rivers, canals and canals; at the same time, waste in the river is collected and recycled.

In order to contribute to improving the efficiency of river waste collection and waste recycling in the city, Clear Rivers Organization has sponsored the implementation of a pilot project to improve the collection of plastic waste by Litter Trap and establishing a recycling system in Can Tho city. The project's goal is to find a sustainable and effective approach by recovering waste from rivers, exploring recycling potential and involving local communities.

With the launch of the pilot project mentioned above, the leaders of the Department of Natural Resources and Environment of the city asked the local authorities to continue to coordinate closely with Clear Rivers Organization to implement the project's items and tasks to effectively, contributing to reducing waste on the canals in the inner city area.

At the launching ceremony, Mr. Ramon Knoester - Founder and Director of Clear Rivers Organization - expressed his pleasure to cooperate and receive enthusiastic support from the Can Tho city government in implementing the project, contributing to eliminating plastic waste in the river.

Mr. Ramon Knoester said that nearly 10 years ago he founded the Clear Rivers Organization with the goal of contributing to preventing plastic pollution in the short and long term with a comprehensive approach, including activities such as clean-up campaigns, installing litter traps, raising awareness and sustainably recycling recovered plastic. With this method, it will contribute to protecting the ecosystem, preventing indirect effects on industries, agriculture and fisheries... in the city.

Immediately after the kick-off ceremony, youth union members launched a mission to clean the environment and collect garbage from the river at Cai Khe Canal.
