Date: 26/06/2024

On June 25, Vice Chairman of Can Tho City People's Committee Nguyen Ngoc He conducted a working session with the Vietnam Chamber of Commerce and Industry, Mekong Delta Branch (VCCI Mekong), the Ministry of Economy, Trade and Industry of Japan (METI), and the Association for Overseas Technical Cooperation and Sustainable Partnerships (AOTS). The focus of the meeting was on implementing the project “Developing an environmental management certification system in the Vietnamese food industry”.

The Japanese Government will be aiding the Vietnam Chamber of Commerce and Industry Can Tho branch (VCCI Can Tho) in establishing a local version of the environmental management certification system, which will be based on the “Eco Action 21” model developed by the Japanese Ministry of Environment.

This system enables businesses and organizations to obtain certification for their efforts in reducing carbon dioxide emissions, wastewater, waste, and chemicals through third-party audits. It is expected that around 7,500 companies will receive this certification by 2023.

Roadmap for developing an environmental management certification system from now until 2027:

- In 2024, conduct training courses and extend invitations to relevant organizations such as the Vietnam Chamber of Commerce and Industry (VCCI), industry associations, and potential assessors for businesses seeking environmental management certification.

- Develop a preliminary certification system through the formation of a working group (WG).

- Explore opportunities for collaboration with Japanese businesses.

These activities will establish the groundwork for implementing a localized version of the environmental management system based on the Japanese "Eco Action 21" model. This system will aid businesses in reducing carbon dioxide emissions, wastewater, waste, and chemicals.

In 2025, prepare for the implementation of the environmental management certification system. This will involve training appraisers and carrying out pilot testing for approximately 2 businesses to assess the certification process. Another goal is to expand and establish business opportunities with Japanese firms.

In 2026, start implementing the environmental management certification system and certify 5 businesses. Continue to improve the environment to maintain system operation. Continue to expand and create business opportunities with Japanese businesses.

From 2027 onwards, VCCI Mekong will organize and operate VCCI's automatic certification system, strengthen cooperation with Japanese businesses, and transfer this system to VCCIs in other regions across the country.

Can Tho City leaders received Japanese partners at the meeting on June 25

During the meeting, Vice Chairman of Can Tho City People's Committee Nguyen Ngoc He expressed strong support for the implementation plan of the Project. He emphasized the positive impact of the Project on food processing businesses in Can Tho City and the Mekong Delta region as a whole.

Vice Chairman Nguyen Ngoc He highlighted the importance of close coordination between VCCI Mekong and relevant agencies to ensure the smooth and prompt implementation of the project. He also stressed the need to promptly address any difficulties and problems that may arise during the implementation process. Additionally, the official expressed hope that METI, AOTS, and VCCI Mekong would assist in attracting Japanese businesses to Can Tho City for investment opportunities and collaboration.
