Can Tho: To explore community-based tourism in Son islet
Date: 05/05/2022

Son islet is a famous community-based tourist destination that you should visit when coming to Can Tho city. This is the place where you will immerse yourself in the beautiful nature, and experience the daily life of the local people. For urban dwellers, Son islet is probably an attractive destination for weekends.

Con Son is an islet in the middle of Hau River which is separated not far away from the mainland. Moreover, this islet has a completely unique space with an area of about 70 hectares of fertile land with alluvial consolidating all year round and green orchards. Here, the air is fresh, the land is fertile, the orchards are luxuriant, and the diverse ecosystem is typical of the Southern countryside. There are less than 100 households on Son islet. Particularly, the local people here are not only honest, and lovely but also hospitable and enthusiastic. Therefore, whoever comes here feels comfortable and connected.

The name Con Son originates from the fact that in the past, there were many Son trees on the islet, a type of tree with latex used to paint ships, boats, household items, or used in lacquer art. Gradually, this profession was lost, and people switched to fish farming and gardening. At that time, people began to come up with the idea of doing community-based tourism here. After many attempts and trials, the community-based tourism on Son islet officially operated in 2015 and is growing day by day. Nowadays, Son islet becomes a typical destination of Binh Thuy, which is loved by many many tourists.

Coming to Son islet, visitors can experience many interesting things. Each household has its own character. Each household on Son islet has its own differences but they work together to provide customers with the best services. Some introduce guests to their fish rafts. Some let tourists enjoy delicious fruits in their orchards and sell fruits to customers. Some teach visitors how to make folk cakes while others provide homestay service. Every household has a role in the supply chain of tourism services, contributing to the Son islet tourism-based community.

One of the most attractive and interesting things in Son islet is visiting fruit gardens and experiencing some local activities. Son islet has a variety of seasonal fruits such as rambutan, longan, grapefruit, dragon fruit, guava, star apple, and the like. Usually, from April to July every year is the fruit season. And perhaps this is also the time when most tourists come to Son islet to enjoy the fruit as much as possible and take beautiful photos in the garden. There are also many other interesting activities that visitors should experience when coming here such as visiting Bay Bon fish raft, draining ditches to catch fish, hunting for snails, picking vegetables, rowing a wooden boat, crossing a monkey bridge, being a farmer in one day, participating in flying snakehead fish show and especially cooking and enjoying rustic dishes, Southern folk cakes, etc.

Son islet is located in area 1, Bui Huu Nghia ward, Binh Thuy district, Can Tho city. From the center of Can Tho city, followed by the direction of National Highway 91 to Co Bac wharf in Binh Thuy ward, Binh Thuy district. At this place, tourists have to park their vehicle in a parking plot and get on the ferry-boat which takes from 5 to 10 minutes to cross the river with the vacancy of about 10 - 15 people each turn. The price may depend on the number of passengers on each trip, but the maximum price is only 10,000 VND for one person each time. One particularly-noteworthy thing is that if travelers want to visit Con Son fully, they should contact in advance with the travel-making households in Con Son in order to have a well-prepared trip with the tourist attractions, dishes, resting places, and appropriate transportations in Son islet.
