Signing Ceremony of Cooperation Agreement with Can Tho University of Medicine and Pharmacy

Can Tho City People's Committee signed a cooperation agreement with Can Tho University of Medicine and Pharmacy on March 27 to develop the healthcare sector.

Several high-ranking officials attended a conference in Can Tho City including Mr. Nguyen Xuan Hai, Standing Vice Chairman of Can Tho Municipal People's Council; Mr. Nguyen Trung Nhan, Chairman of the Vietnam Fatherland Front Committee of Can Tho City; Mr. Nguyen Thuc Hien, Vice Chairman of Can Tho Municipal People's Committee; Associate Professor, Dr. Nguyen Minh Phuong, Chairman of the Council of Can Tho University of Medicine and Pharmacy; Prof. Dr. Nguyen Trung Kien, Principal of Can Tho University of Medicine and Pharmacy; and representatives of relevant departments and agencies in Can Tho City.

According to the MoU, Can Tho City People's Committee and Can Tho University of Medicine and Pharmacy, depending on their functions, tasks, abilities, and needs of both parties, will cooperate in developing the healthcare sector and making Can Tho a specialized medical center of the Mekong Delta region in accordance with Resolution No. 59-NQ/TW dated August 5, 2020 of the Politburo. Additionally, the two sides will upgrade Can Tho University of Medicine and Pharmacy to become a national key institution in accordance with Resolution No. 98/NQ-CP dated August 30, 2021 of the Government.

The two parties have agreed to collaborate in several areas, including training, science and technology, healthcare, preventive healthcare, and community service. During the signing ceremony, Mr. Nguyen Thuc Hien, Vice Chairman of Can Tho City People's Committee, expressed his appreciation for the close partnership between Can Tho University of Medicine and Pharmacy and the city over the years. He emphasized that this collaboration will enable both sides to leverage their potential and strengths to develop a modern healthcare system that meets the increasingly diverse needs of the community. This memorandum of understanding serves as a foundation for future specific agreements, providing opportunities for resource sharing, expertise exchange, and meaningful participation in health projects for students, lecturers, and researchers.

At the event

Vice Chairman of Can Tho City People's Committee Nguyen Thuc Hien has assigned the Department of Health, Department of Planning and Investment, Department of Science and Technology, and other relevant agencies to work together with Can Tho University of Medicine and Pharmacy to develop a detailed plan for the effective implementation of the signed contents. The plan should align with the city's healthcare sector development orientation and actual conditions to achieve the highest efficiency. The official also requested Can Tho University of Medicine and Pharmacy to coordinate closely with local authorities to implement the Memorandum of Understanding.

In recent years, there has been a close cooperation relationship between the People's Committee of Can Tho City and Can Tho University of Medicine and Pharmacy in developing the city's healthcare sector. During the COVID-19 outbreak, Can Tho University of Medicine and Pharmacy actively supported Can Tho City in pandemic prevention and control; thereby contributing to the good control of the COVID-19 pandemic and creating a premise for the city to recover and develop its economy and society.

Can Tho University of Medicine and Pharmacy was established in 2002 on the basis of the Faculty of Medicine - Dentistry - Pharmacy of Can Tho University. Over time, the school has become a prestigious institution in training medical professionals. The school has trained nearly 15,000 students across 10 university-level majors and 90 postgraduate majors and specialties. It has produced many generations of doctors and nurses serving Can Tho City and the entire Mekong Delta region. Additionally, Can Tho University of Medicine and Pharmacy Hospital has become a reliable medical facility for the people.
