Art programs promote integration
Date: 04/04/2024

In recent years, Can Tho City has been organizing regular art performances for its residents and tourists. These programs aim to preserve and promote traditional culture and arts, while also creating tourism-related products that showcase the city's unique identity to international visitors. This is a great way to enhance the city's tourism development and highlight the richness of its cultural heritage.
Southern folk music performance on boat for tourists at Cai Rang floating market

On a weekend morning at Cai Rang Floating Market, amidst the busy traders and tourists, suddenly the distant sound of Can Tho chanty, the Southern traditional lute being played, and a female artist singing the Nam Xuan tune could be heard. The atmosphere of Cai Rang floating market became romantic and beautiful with the music and lyrics. A boat carrying traditional Southern artists passed by and Ms. Nguyen Dinh Tuyet Phuong, a tourist from Quang Nam, waved goodbye and said: "The artists sing so well!" Listening to Southern folk music at Cai Rang Floating Market is very interesting. "I've heard a lot about it from people, and today I get to enjoy it for the first time," she added.

The Don Ca Tai Tu performance boat is periodically performed by Tay Do Theater in coordination with Cai Rang District Culture, Sports, and Radio Center on Cai Rang Floating Market every Saturday and Sunday morning. Mr. Dang Ngoc Nhan, Director of the Center for Culture, Sports, and Radio of Cai Rang district, said: "After a long time in charge of implementing this performance program, the artists are excited by the response of tourists. Many foreign visitors interacted and took photos with the artists, showing the attraction of this program."

Visitors can also immerse themselves in the “Southern music’s playground” and enjoy traditional art performances every Friday and Saturday night in Ninh Kieu Park. Arts such as Cai Luong (reformed theatre), chanty, folk singing, and dancing are performed. These activities have been maintained for many years and have received the love of many domestic and international tourists.

Can Tho City People's Committee has recently approved a policy to continue organizing periodic art performances in 2024, with the aim of promoting and preserving traditional art forms of the nation. The Department of Culture, Sports and Tourism will be assigned to advise on the organization of these events, which will cater to the needs of both locals and tourists to enjoy art on weekends. These events will also aim to diversify the types of cultural and artistic activities in the city.

Don Ca Tai Tu performance program will take place on Saturday and Sunday mornings every week at Cai Rang Floating Market, with a duration of 60 minutes per show. The program will include performances, introductions, and promotions of the 20 ancestral songs of Don Ca Tai Tu, as well as excerpts from Cai Luong and Southern Cai Luong songs. Tay Do Theater and Cai Rang District Culture, Sports and Radio Center will be responsible for organizing the program.

In addition, the Can Tho City Cultural Center will coordinate with relevant units to organize two periodic performance programs every other week at Ninh Kieu Wharf Park. These programs will include Don Ca Tai Tu, Cai Luong, and general art programs, each with a duration of about 60 minutes. The content of these programs will focus on praising the Party, Uncle Ho, and the homeland, as well as introducing and promoting the image and cultural identity of Can Tho.

Can Tho Municipal Department of Culture, Sports, and Tourism has announced that this year's Don Ca Tai Tu and Cai Luong programs will be different from previous years. The program will feature four performances showcasing the songs and rhythms of Don Ca Tai Tu and Cai Luong excerpts performed alternately throughout the year. Additionally, the program will include four general art programs focusing on certain themes that highlight the cultural identity of the Mekong Delta region and the people of Can Tho.

Can Tho Municipal Department of Culture, Sports, and Tourism has also announced a new program by Tay Do Theater named "Da Co Cam Thi". The program will begin in March 2024 and will take place every Sunday of the last week of each month, at the Tay Do Theater stage (located at No. 105 Tran Hung Dao, An Phu Ward, Ninh Kieu District, Can Tho City). This program aims to shift from online service to direct service through theatrical forms with art forms such as opera performances, quizzes, sports games, and dance sports. The target audience for this program is students, and devotees in the city.

In order to preserve and spread culture among the locals and international tourists, applying and utilizing traditional cultural values, particularly traditional arts and performing arts, is a great approach. It also serves as a cultural and artistic bridge in the process of development and international integration of Can Tho City. Mr. Nguyen Minh Tuan, Director of the Department of Culture, Sports and Tourism of Can Tho City, has stated that periodic art performance activities in 2024 will be based on past years' programs, inheriting previous experience and effectiveness. In 2024, Can Tho Municipal Department of Culture, Sports and Tourism will continue to direct specialized units to focus on investing and improving the quality of each program, diversifying forms of expression, and ensuring both national cultural identity and modern cultural identity to attract audiences.
