A delegation from Can Tho City meets with the authorities of Wernigerode City, Federal Republic of Germany

(CTO) - On the morning of July 8th, the investment promotion delegation from Can Tho City, led by Mr. Duong Tan Hien, Pernament Vice Chairman of the People's Committee of Can Tho City, visited and met with the authorities of Wernigerode, Federal Republic of Germany.

Wernigerode is known as the "Colorful City in the Harz Region" and was established in 1229 with a population of over 32,600 people and an area of 170km2. With its unique natural landscape, Wernigerode has strengths in tourism development and attracts approximately 2.5 million visitors each year.

During the meeting, the authorities of Wernigerode shared their experiences in sustainable tourism development, enhancing the responsibility of tourism workers and tourists in environmental protection. In addition, Wernigerode prioritizes urban planning and environmental protection in a nature-friendly and close-to-nature approach. The authorities of Wernigerode expressed their strong impression of their visit to Can Tho City in March 2024 and expressed their desire for both cities to enhance cooperation in their respective areas of strength.

The representative of the Wernigerode authorities shared with the Can Tho City delegation the experience of developing green tourism models adapted to climate change.

On behalf of the delegation, Mr. Duong Tan Hien expressed his honor to be warmly received by the authorities of Wernigerode. He also shared that as a central city in the Mekong Delta, Can Tho City has been making continuous efforts to achieve the goal of becoming an eco-friendly, civilized, modern city with a strong cultural identity in the Southeast Asian region, belonging to the group of well-developed cities in Asia. Can Tho City attaches great importance to environmental protection in the process of construction and development, focusing on developing a green, circular, and sustainable economy. The city has implemented comprehensive propaganda and mobilization activities for residents, businesses, and tourists to join hands in protecting the environment. In the development orientation of Can Tho City, tourism is always prioritized, with a focus on investment to develop it into a key economic sector. The city hopes to learn valuable practical experiences from Wernigerode in developing green tourism models, environmental protection, and climate change adaptation. Can Tho City has a abundant young workforce, especially in the tourism industry. Therefore, the two cities can complement each other's strengths for mutual development.

On this occasion, Mr. Duong Tan Hien cordially invited Wernigerode to organize a return visit to Can Tho City in 2025, on the occasion of the 50th anniversary of the establishment of diplomatic relations between the two countries, and to jointly organize some activities to commemorate this important event. This will provide both cities with more opportunities to learn about each other, laying the foundation for solidarity, exchange, and cooperation in the future.

* In the afternoon of the same day, the Can Tho City delegation continued their field trip to learn about the experience in developing green and environmentally friendly tourism models, as well as exploring investment cooperation opportunities with Wernigerode. This aims to strengthen the cooperative relationship between the two cities and between businesses from Can Tho City and Wernigerode.

The Can Tho City delegation visits the People's Park in Wernigerode. This is a park model that combines playgrounds to educate young people about environmental protection.

In recent years, the strategic partnership between Vietnam and the Federal Republic of Germany has deepened in various fields. Germany remains Vietnam's largest trading partner in the European Union, and Vietnam has become Germany's largest trading partner in Southeast Asia. Bilateral trade turnover in 2023 reached over 11 billion USD according to Vietnam's statistics, and 17.12 billion USD according to the Federal Statistical Office of Germany. Economic diplomacy has expanded with significant progress. In the 2024-2025 period, Germany commits to providing non-refundable aid of 61 million Euros to Vietnam.

Currently, Can Tho City has three FDI projects with investment from Germany, with a total registered capital of about 58 million USD. These projects are in the fields of rice processing and export, production of high-quality particleboards from rice husks, and industrial machinery and equipment consulting, design, and supply. In 2023, the export turnover to the German market was 18.15 million USD, with main export items including rice, seafood, agricultural products and processed agricultural products, textiles, and handicrafts. The import turnover was 0.26 million USD, with major import items being pharmaceutical materials and machinery and equipment.
