Conference to deploy tasks for socio-economic development in June

On May 30, Chairman of Can Tho City People's Committee Tran Viet Truong presided over a conference reviewing the socio-economic development situation in May and deploying tasks in June 2024. The meeting had the participation of representatives from Can Tho City People's Council, Can Tho City People's Committee, the Vietnam Fatherland Front Committee of Can Tho City as well as leaders of departments, agencies, and People's committees of 9 districts in Can Tho City.

Can Tho Municipal Department of Planning and Investment report that the city's socio-economic situation in May and the first five months of 2024 remains stable and has achieved positive results in all fields. In May, the index of industrial production (IIP) is estimated to have increased by 7.51% compared to the previous month and by 5.04% compared to the same period last year. Cumulatively in the first 5 months of 2024, IIP is estimated to have increased by 6.96% compared to the same period in 2023. Additionally, the total retail sales of goods and service revenue in May 2024 is estimated to be over 11,866 billion VND, which is up 5.3% over the previous month and up 21.77% over the same period in 2023. In the first 5 months of 2024, the total retail sales of goods and service revenue are estimated to reach over 54,762 billion VND, showing an increase of 11.84% over the same period in 2023.

Moreover, the export turnover of goods and service revenue is estimated to be over 956.7 million USD, up 5.7% over the same period, reaching 43.81% of the plan.

In May 2024, the total number of tourists to the city is estimated to reach 550 thousand, bringing the total number of visitors in the first 5 months of 2024 to 3.311 million, an increase of 6% over the same period, reaching 54% of the plan. Also, the total tourism revenue in May is estimated at 451 billion VND, bringing the total tourism revenue in the first 5 months of 2024 to 2.96 trillion VND, an increase of 10% over the same period.

The city has seen some positive outcomes, such as administrative reform and digital transformation leading to increased convenience for individuals and organizations when carrying out administrative procedures. There has also been a focus on social and cultural development, with attention given to policies benefitting individuals who have served the country and ensuring social security and well-being. Festivals and cultural activities that reflect the national identity are flourishing, while efforts to strengthen national defense and security, and to maintain social order and safety, are ongoing.

The city's economic situation improved compared to previous months and the same period last year. However, there are still areas that have not met the yearly plan progress, with some public investment projects falling behind schedule. As of May 29, public investment disbursement has only reached 26.5% of the plan assigned by Can Tho City People's Council.

During the meeting, Chairman of Can Tho City People's Committee Tran Viet Truong urged departments, agencies, and People's Committees of districts to promptly prepare reports, proposals, and drafts for submission to Can Tho City People's Council at the upcoming mid-2024 conference. They were asked to focus on enhancing task implementation in 2024, proactively forecasting economic growth scenarios, and prioritizing the promotion of economic growth with a focus on driving forces such as investment, consumption, and export. Additionally, they were encouraged to continue working on improving the investment and business environment, addressing production and business-related challenges, and prioritizing the efficient disbursement of public investment capital to achieve the highest rate in 2024.

The leader of Can Tho City People's Committee has tasked the Department of Culture, Sports, and Tourism with leading and coordinating efforts with relevant agencies and units to implement strategies for promoting sustainable tourism development and creating new, high-value tourism products. They are also responsible for deploying comprehensive inter-agency coordination measures for promoting tourism and improving transportation to attract both domestic and international tourists during the summer season of 2024.

Furthermore, Can Tho Municipal Department of Education and Training has been assigned to collaborate with relevant units to facilitate the 2024 high school graduation exam and the high school entrance exam for the 2024-2025 school year, ensuring that these events are conducted seriously, effectively, and in compliance with regulations.
