Little but not so Little

Vietnam has always identified safe and friendly tourism as a focus. As part of this strategy, Can Tho aspires to be recognized as an “ideal, safe, and friendly tourist destination”, However, there are still minor issues impacting the city's tourism image that need to be addressed.

A tourist had some unpleasant experiences in Can Tho. D and his two friends visited Binh Thuy Communal House, a place with unique architecture, and took beautiful photos. However, D's group was asked to pay more than the prescribed fee multiple times because they had brought professional photography equipment. D believed that there should be specific regulations on this matter. Similarly, Mr. T, a media worker, and some friends were asked to pay ten times the entrance fee at Binh Thuy Communal House because the group brought a video camera. Similar incidents occurred at the Cai Rang floating market. A group of tourists informed us that they had agreed to pay for the service of enjoying pineapple on a boat, but just because they brought video cameras, the boat owner asked for more money before allowing them to film and take pictures. Some tourist attractions have clear regulations on each type of service fee that visitors must pay, including clearly stating that groups of visitors using professional cameras must pay a higher fee. For tourists, this is completely acceptable if they are informed beforehand. However, some places do not have clear regulations, making tourists feel like they are being overcharged, and this unintentionally affects the tourism image of Can Tho City.

Lately, there have been complaints from tourists about the way tourism is conducted in Con Son. The incident involving a tourist and a longan garden owner, which was posted on TikTok by user L, is just one example of the issues. This has highlighted the need for better management of tourism activities, especially in Con Son, due to the various forms of tourism in the area. In addition to the Con Son Agricultural Tourism Cooperative, which focuses on community tourism, there are also independent gardeners involved in the tourism business. Visitors in groups or those who purchase tours will receive clear instructions from travel agencies or the Con Son Agricultural Tourism Cooperative. However, individual travelers might not be as informed about Con Son and could get lost or be misled by people not involved in the genuine tourism business.

The rapid growth of tourism in Con Son in recent years has led to several issues, such as unhealthy competition and disputes. Individual travelers who did not book tours in advance have encountered uncomfortable situations, had unpleasant experiences, and felt deceived. For instance, upon arriving on the Con Son islet, tourists were pressured to pay 50,000-100,000 VND per person to hire a guide, typically a young person, to take them to the gardens and then leave them to explore on their own. Phan Kim Ngan, Director of Con Son Agricultural Tourism Cooperative, reported that many visitors had complained about being misled. She explained that her cooperative requires booking for products and services, ensuring attentive and high-quality service by local tour guides holding valid tour guide cards. Similar issues have been faced by other garden operators, leading to misunderstandings and negative perceptions of tourism in Con Son and Can Tho. Phan Kim Ngan has raised this matter with the local authorities to address the impact on the region's tourism image.

With the current advancement in technology, tourists can now travel independently with complete information from maps or digital platform applications about tourist destinations. However, during our visit to Con Son Islet, we observed the absence of general signs for tourists. Many gardeners who wish to promote their destinations had to erect their own signs. As a result, upon arriving at Con Son, tourists are greeted by numerous billboards of various sizes, creating a messy and unsightly environment. This lack of professionalism in promoting Can Tho's destinations raises concerns. Despite these issues being seemingly minor, if not promptly addressed, they could have significant consequences for the city's tourism sector, particularly impacting Can Tho's desired image as an "Ideal - safe - friendly tourist destination."
