The “Sustainable Development Project for One Million Hectares of Specialized, Low-Emission High-Quality Rice Farming in association with Green Growth in the Mekong Delta Region by 2030" aims to restructure the production system by focusing on the value chain, implementing sustainable farming practices, and enhancing the sustainability and efficiency of the rice industry. The project also focuses on improving the income and livelihoods of farmers, protecting the environment, addressing climate change, and reducing greenhouse gas emissions. This initiative aligns with Vietnam's international commitments at the 26th United Nations Climate Change Summit (COP26), contributing significantly to Vietnam's goal of achieving net-zero emissions by 2050.

Can Tho City has a total natural land area of about 141,000 hectares, with nearly 80% designated agricultural land. The city's annual rice cultivation area exceeds 75,000 hectares, yielding over 1.3 million tons of rice annually. According to the Can Tho City Master Planning for 2021 - 2030, with a vision to 2050, the city will establish a specialized rice production area covering 48,000 hectares, focused in the three districts of Thoi Lai, Co Do, and Vinh Thanh.

During the conference, experts and scientists presented on various agricultural emissions and greenhouse gases topics. The presentations included discussions on collaboration and research on greenhouse gas emissions in agricultural cultivation, methods for measuring greenhouse gas emissions, farming models that effectively reduce greenhouse gas emissions, technical solutions to reduce greenhouse gas emissions in high-quality rice cultivation projects, greenhouse gas monitoring methods, and experiences in applying solutions to reduce greenhouse gas emissions in An Giang through the VNSAT project. Participants exchanged and discussed the advantages and disadvantages of applying techniques and technological solutions, specific issues related to greenhouse gas emissions, and effective implementation of projects in the unique conditions of Can Tho City.

During the conference, Vice Chairman of Can Tho City People's Committee Nguyen Ngoc He expressed his gratitude for the support of the Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development and the International Rice Research Institute in selecting Can Tho City to develop the One Million Hectares of Low-Emission High-Quality Rice Project. This initiative serves as a pilot model for Can Tho City and other localities in the Mekong Delta to share experiences, and work together to find effective solutions for implementing the project in the future. Vice Chairman Nguyen Ngoc He emphasized the significance of the conference, highlighting its profound and timely content, and the opportunity it provides for exchanging ideas, learning from experiences, and identifying effective solutions and methods in rice production.
