The August 1945 Revolution to take the government back to the people of Can Tho
Date: 08/01/2023

On March 9, 1945, during the Japanese coup d'etat against the French, the situation in the country was extremely chaotic, and the people's lives were more and more miserable because of the Japanese policy of repression and plunder. Faced with that situation, the Standing Committee of the Party Central Committee advocated "Evicting France - Japan", launching a movement against Japan to save the country, creating a climax for the general rebelling. Can Tho Provincial Party Committee urgently built the United National Front and quickly gathered forces, especially the religions (Cao Dai, Hoa Hao). At the same time, the Western Inter-provincial Party Committee was established in order to firmly consolidate the leadership structure of the mass movement in the western provinces.

Seizing the opportunity of the Japanese army's fall and getting weaker on the international front, our Party built the Young Pioneers organization led by Doctor Pham Ngoc Thach in May 1945 to focus on young people following the revolution. This is a clever and timely strategy of "use his stick smashing his back" before the Japanese can carry out a scheme to entice our youth into their side. On June 20, 1945, the Can Tho Young Pioneers organization was officially established with more than 70,000 young people participating in the organization. Along with the growing mass force, the leadership cadres were also consolidated with the development of Party bodies in the locality. Realizing that the opportunity was approaching, the provincial Party Committees of the localities decided to urgently build up armed forces, practice day and night and prepare weapons for the general rebelling. On August 12, 1945, Japanese fascists surrendered unconditionally to the Allies, and Japanese troops stationed in the countries were paralyzed. In Indochina, the puppet government of Tran Trong Kim collapsed. The time for general rebelling was really ripe. The National Conference of the Party and the National Congress ordered a nationwide rebelling. On August 17, 1945, the provincial Party Committee of Can Tho held a meeting to discuss the rebelling, and on August 19, a conference was convened to establish the "National Liberation Committee".

The rebellions in the localities had successively won, the revolutionary spirit was high, and the enemy was even more confused.

In the early morning of August 26, 1945, over 20,000 compatriots in Can Tho province raised the slogans "Government to the people", and "Long live independent Vietnam". After listening to the summons of the National Liberation Committee, armed protesters marched all over the street and gathered at the XT Palace to demand that the henchman of the province hand over the government to the National Liberation Committee of Can Tho province, in front of the enthusiasm of the masses, the provincial governor Luu Van Tao was forced to accept the people's request, ordered the dissolution of the puppet government and asked the revolutionary government to make him a citizen of an independent Vietnam. The rebelling in Can Tho was successful, the government belonged to the people, led by the National Liberation Committee.

On August 28, 1945, the Administrative Committee of Can Tho province was established.

Together with the whole country, the people of Can Tho province rose up to revolt to seize power in the August Revolution of 1945. This was the culmination of the revolutionary climax of 1929-1945 under the leadership of the Party.
