Phong Dien-Can Tho Ecotourism Festival 2022 opens

On September 24th, the 9th Phong Dien - Can Tho Ecotourism Festival 2022 with the theme “Rethinking tourism” officially opened at Phong Dien District Square. Mr. Pham Van Hieu, Standing Deputy Secretary of the municipal Party Committee and Chairman of the People's Council of Can Tho city; Mr. Nguyen Xuan Hai, Standing Vice Chairman of the People's Council of Can Tho city; Mr. Nguyen Thuc Hien, Vice Chairman of the People's Committee of Can Tho city; and leaders, former leaders of Can Tho city; leaders of departments, tourism businesses from 10 provinces and cities attended the opening ceremony.

Phong Dien-Can Tho Ecotourism Festival is an annual event organized by the District People's Committee of Phong Dien in collaboration with the municipal Department of Culture, Sports and Tourism. The festival which is part of activities celebrating World Tourism Day on September 27th attracts 60 display booths of 10 units of provinces and cities. The event aims to promote eco-tourism; introduce local specialties and tourism products; create opportunities for businesses to connect and cooperate.

The festival will include a series of activities, such as a seminar introducing a set of green tourism criteria, the introduction of popular tourist areas of the Mekong Delta region in 2022, performances of Don Ca Tai Tu Nam Bo (southern amateur music), fruit arrangement performance, a contest of southern traditional cakes and dishes, a marathon, boat race and folk games.

Speaking at the opening ceremony, Mr. Nguyen Minh Tuan, Director of the Department of Culture, Sports and Tourism of Can Tho city, said that the city’s tourism industry has seen a strong recovery with a sharp increase in tourists. Can Tho received nearly four million visitors in the first eight months of this year, presenting a year-on-year increase of 91 percent. Revenue from tourism reached more than VND2,600 billion, up 104 percent compared to the same period last year.

Mr. Nguyen Thuc Hien, Vice Chairman of the People's Committee of Can Tho city, said that the festival is both a tourism highlight of the locality and a promotion to the city's tourism development in the spirit of Resolution No. 10 dated December 29th, 2021 of the Can Tho city’s Party Committee. Vice Chairman Nguyen Thuc Hien directed the municipal Department of Culture, Sports and Tourism, People's Committee of Phong Dien District, and relevant agencies to focus on a number of key tasks: raise people’s awareness about eco-friendly tourism development and environmental protection; tourism development planning must be consistent with the general planning of the city; focus on eco-tourism, healthcare tourism, leisure tourism; strengthen tourism promotion; preserve and promote tangible and intangible cultural heritages, cultural institutions associated with tourism development; focus on transport infrastructure investment; promote cooperation in tourism development; enhance digital transformation.
