Sampan rides at the Phi Yen orchard-ecotourism site
Date: 29/03/2022

16 km from downtown Can Tho, Phi Yen Orchard-Ecotourism Site (Nguyen Van Cu Street, Nhon Loc Hamlet 1, Phong Dien Town) is a new destination in Phong Dien District. This place is an open space, a verdant garden with trees laden with fruit, with an authentic beauty of times gone by.

This site covers an area of 1.7 ha, two-thirds of which are orchards. The garden is planted in 'liếp' (strips of land separated by ditches and covered by soil recovered from these ditches) bordered by ditches, so it is very poetic for visitors to row sampans along these ditches while picking fruits. Here, there are many characteristic fruits of Phong Dien, such as oranges, Ha Chau Burmese grapes, jackfruit, mangoes, langsat fruits (large-fruited sweet duku), mangosteens, and so on. The highlight of this garden is that visitors can freely pick fruits and taste them on-site.

Coming here, visitors will be able to enjoy experiences of the South West countryside, such as crossing a rope bridge, fishing; or learning to row a sampan or a wooden boat – typical means of transport in the river region.

Mr. Ngo Trong Phu, owner of this tourist site, said: “During the development of this site, I wanted to preserve an authentic space with the goal that visitors can know or find the image of the countryside in the old days. Coming here is like going back to the old village of our grandparents where there was the garden, the streams, and the sampans, and there is a friendly place to enjoy delicious dishes of the traditional cuisine of the southern region. For this purpose, many folk cakes are available here such as banh bong lan (Sponge cake), banh kep (pancake), banh tet (cylindrical-shaped glutinous rice cake), banh da lon (steamed layered cake), and rustic dishes based on fish, snails, chicken... with vegetables from the vegetable garden.

Ngo Nguyen Hong Loan, a tourist, said: “I like the space here, the garden is airy and shady. My favorite activity is to row the sampan along the small canals to discover the orchard, it is very interesting”.

Also at Phi Yen orchard-ecotourism site, there are many miniature landscapes and flower gardens where visitors can take beautiful photos. In addition, homestay accommodation is available so visitors can experience the countryside at night if they wish. According to Mr. Ngo Trong Phu, in the near future, this site will expand to an area of about 1.7 ha more. This expansion area will be equipped with entertainment services, mainly sports, folk games, and a swimming pool. In addition, with the desire to preserve the rural characteristics of Phong Dien, a land of fruit production, it is planned to recreate the mini floating market for visitors to have more leisure and learn more about the specific culture of the river region.

The Phi Yen orchard-ecotourism site has only been in operation for almost 2 months, but it is becoming a favorite destination for many tourists who love nature and weekend relaxation.
